On This Day

April 3, 2008
04:12 AM

In 1972 I was lucky enough to meet this young one
at a party in Michael Healy’s house in Baile na hAbhain
in Connemara.

The following day she headed off to Inis Mór from Ros a Mhíl
with her sister Úna (wearing a red hat)

I took this photo of the two of them
on the ferry to Áran,
On this day.

The following year, Dear Reader, I married her.

That boat is the Queen of Aran (built by Hickey Boats of Galway, a company long since gone). I spent many nights on her as she used be hired by the Department of Oceanography, UCG for field work in Galway Bay for three or four days every month all year round. She was a fantastic seaworthy boat. The man with the hat is John Mullins from Aran who was the skipper. His sister Pádraigín Ní Mhaolaín used teach in Scoil Lorcáin in Monkstown, Co. Dublin.
