Donal Moore, the Waterford City Archivist (and also a great friend of ours) has put together another collection of Annie Brophy photographs.
This one called “Wedding Bells” shows a selection of wedding photos taken by Annie between the Twenties and the Seventies in Waterford.
Annie was a Waterford institution during this time and this is but the tiniest tip of her extensive collection and enormously endearing.
I was particularly taken by the earlier ones, nervous couples in clothes in which they were obviously uncomfortable posing in her studio shyly.
The one I reproduce here (with Donal’s permission) is from the thirties and of an obviously well-to-do farming couple, they may even have belonged to the ascendancy from the quality of their clothes, but the background seems to indicate to me that they were pictured outside the door of a working farm.

The names are given as Tom Twyford marrying Catherine Hassett in Kilclooney Co. Waterford in the 1930s
It is only one of many glories of this exhibition which is presently running in Christchurch Cathedral in Waterford.

on August 29, 2008Martin, this looks great. I don’t have all the details but I believe that Tom Twyford was an engineer from England.
We also believe the photo was taken outside a house in Tramore-If you look closely you can see a “4” on the door between the bride and groom’s heads.

on August 29, 2008The exhibition runs in Christ Church Cathedral Waterford until 25th September. Open 10.00-18.00, Monday-Friday; 10.00-16.00 Saturday. Admission is free.

on September 7, 2008This takes me back. Where New York had Annie Liebowitz, we had Annie Brophy. Rites of passage were marked by a trip to Annie’s studio. Right now I can see a photo of myself as a very fat baby (Jabba the Hutt with curls) taken by Annie Brophy on my first birthday.
According to my mother, the couple in the wedding photo must be Protestants, because nobody else had white weddings in the 1930s!

on September 9, 2008Just found your site Martin from a link on Bibliocook – Would love to see Annie Brophy’s exhibit, unfortunately live in Connecticut USA. I have some really bautiful photographs of my brother and I from the ’40’s – one especially nice tinted photo at age 5,
Other than this exhibit is there a way of seeing the photos post this showing?
