Nicholas Volley was an English painter, of much the same age as myself, who died last week.
The Independent printed this picture as part of his obituary.
I had never heard of him before but have fallen for the picture.
I love the coppery greens and the rusty frying pan in this composition.

I am at the moment trying to find out more about him.

on June 26, 2006I was a great friend of Nick’s in his Grimsby days and afetr he left for London. We lost touch for perhaps thirty years until two years ago when we met up in Islington when I was doing a poetry book launch. He had not changed one jot in terms of his commitment to his painting priciples although he had tried less figurative approaches. I wrote a poem about my visit to his studio in Spitalsfiels which I’d be glad to send you if interested. How good to know that others rspond instictively to his brilliance!
